- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil, for frying

- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, browned
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp pure maple syrup
- 1 tbsp milk (more if needed)
- Seeds from 1 vanilla bean (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)
- 1. In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg.
- 2. In another bowl, cream sugar and butter. Beat in eggs, then mix in buttermilk and vanilla.
- 3. Gradually add dry ingredients to form a soft dough. Chill for 30 minutes.
- 4. Roll dough on a floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into bar shapes.
- 5. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry donut bars in batches until golden brown on both sides, about 1–2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- 6. For glaze, brown butter in a small saucepan until nutty and golden. Whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, and vanilla bean seeds until smooth.
- 7. Dip warm donut bars into glaze and place on a rack to set before serving.
Notes
- Best enjoyed the same day they’re made.
- Add a pinch of cinnamon to the glaze for extra warmth.
- If glaze thickens, whisk in a splash more milk.
