Christmas Gooey Butter Cookies Recipe

Soft, pillowy Christmas gooey butter cookies made with cream cheese and cake mix, rolled in powdered sugar for a snowy holiday look. Ultra chewy, festive, and incredibly easy to make.

  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 box vanilla or yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)
  • Optional: red & green sprinkles or holiday sanding sugar

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • 2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
  • 3. Add egg and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
  • 4. Gradually mix in cake mix until a thick dough forms.
  • 5. Chill dough for 30 minutes for easier handling.
  • 6. Scoop dough into 1-inch balls and roll generously in powdered sugar.
  • 7. Place cookies 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets.
  • 8. Bake 10–12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft.
  • 9. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

  • Do not overbake cookies should look slightly underdone.
  • Add peppermint extract for a holiday twist.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
