French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes: Cheesy Comfort

A rich and savory twist on classic sloppy joes inspired by French onion soup. Juicy ground beef is simmered with caramelized onions in a beefy gravy, then piled onto buns and topped with gooey melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 46 slices provolone, Swiss, or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • 1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • 2. Add onions and cook 15–20 minutes, stirring often, until deeply caramelized.
  • 3. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  • 4. Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  • 5. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir well; cook 1 minute.
  • 6. Slowly pour in beef broth, stirring until a thick gravy forms.
  • 7. Add Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  • 8. Simmer 5–7 minutes until saucy.
  • 9. Spoon beef mixture onto buns and top with cheese.
  • 10. Broil briefly or cover skillet until cheese is melted.
  • 11. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Toast buns lightly to prevent sogginess.
  • Gruyère cheese adds the most authentic French onion flavor.
  • Serve with fries, chips, or a simple green salad.
