French Onion Dip Recipe

French Onion Dip features deeply caramelized onions blended into creamy sour cream base with savory seasonings. Rich homemade version far surpasses store-bought with sweet onion depth and perfect chip-dipping consistency.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 large yellow onions thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • 1 1/2 cups sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp chives chopped
  • Black pepper

Instructions

  • 1. Melt butter in skillet over medium. Add onions, salt, sugar. Cook 30-40 minutes stirring occasionally until deep golden brown.
  • 2. Cool onions completely. Blend with cream cheese until smooth.
  • 3. Fold in sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire, chives, and pepper.
  • 4. Chill 2+ hours for flavors to meld. Serve with ridged potato chips.

Notes

  • Caramelize onions low and slow for sweetness.
  • Room temperature cream cheese blends smoothest.
