- 6 slices soft white bread or brioche (crusts removed)
- 6 tbsp Nutella or chocolate hazelnut spread
- 1 large egg
- 1 tbsp milk
- Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)
- Cooking spray or butter (for pan)
- 1. Remove crusts from bread slices. Use rolling pin or back of spoon to flatten each slice slightly, creating a slight depression in center while keeping ½-inch border.
- 2. Spread 1 tbsp Nutella in center of each slice, leaving border clean to prevent leakage. Fold bread in half over filling, pressing edges firmly together.
- 3. Whisk egg and milk together for egg wash. Brush edges generously with egg wash, then crimp with fork tines to seal completely.
- 4. Brush tops with remaining egg wash. For air fryer: Spray basket, cook at 350°F for 4-5 minutes until golden. For oven: Place on parchment-lined tray, 400°F for 8-10 minutes.
- 5. Cool 2 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm for perfect gooey center.
Notes
- Use soft fresh bread stale bread cracks when folding.
- Don’t overfill; 1 tbsp prevents bursting during cooking.
- Egg wash creates golden crispy crust; don’t skip this step.
- Air fryer gives superior crispiness; oven works well too.
- Freeze assembled (uncooked) pies up to 1 month; air fry from frozen +1-2 minutes.
