Orange Cardamom Breakfast Bread Twist Recipe

  • Dough:
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp instant yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • Filling:
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • Glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  • 1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, yeast, salt, and cardamom.
  • 2. Add warm milk, melted butter, egg, orange zest, and orange juice. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  • 3. Knead dough 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour or until doubled.
  • 4. Roll dough into a rectangle on a floured surface.
  • 5. Spread softened butter over dough. Mix brown sugar, cardamom, and orange zest, then sprinkle evenly over butter.
  • 6. Fold dough lengthwise, then cut into strips. Twist each strip and place into a greased loaf pan or braid into a twist shape.
  • 7. Cover and let rise 30 minutes.
  • 8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden.
  • 9. Whisk glaze ingredients and drizzle over warm bread before serving.

  • Serve warm for the best texture and aroma.
  • Add chopped almonds or pistachios for extra crunch.
  • Leftovers keep well wrapped for up to 2 days.
