Swedish Cardamom Cake Recipe

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp ground cardamom
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Optional glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar + 1–2 tsp milk
- 1. In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with a pinch of sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- 2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and cardamom.
- 3. Add melted butter, egg, vanilla, and yeast mixture. Mix to form a soft dough.
- 4. Knead dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
- 5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
- 6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 7. Shape dough into a round or braided loaf and place on a baking sheet.
- 8. Bake for 25–30 minutes until golden and a skewer comes out clean.
- 9. Optional: whisk glaze ingredients and drizzle over cooled cake.
