Authentic Homemade Falafel

Enjoy the crispy exterior and soft interior of authentic homemade falafel, a beloved Middle Eastern dish that’s healthier and customizable.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup dried chickpeas
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Soak the Chickpeas: Soak the dried chickpeas in a large bowl of water for at least 8 hours or overnight. Drain and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Blend the Ingredients: In a food processor, combine the soaked chickpeas, chopped onion, minced garlic, parsley, cilantro, cumin, coriander, baking powder, salt, and pepper. Pulse until a coarse paste forms.
  3. Form the Falafel Balls: Shape the mixture into balls or patties about the size of a golf ball. Wet your hands slightly to prevent sticking.
  4. Heat the Oil: In a deep pan, add oil for frying and heat to around 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fry the Falafel: Cook each falafel for about 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to turn them halfway through cooking.
  6. Drain and Serve: Remove from oil, drain on paper towels, and serve warm with pita bread or your favorite sauce.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes.
