Chai Cinnamon Rolls

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon chai spice mix
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar for caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup butter for caramel sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chai spice mix for caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and chai spice mix.
  2. Activate the yeast: Heat the milk until it’s warm, then add the instant yeast and melted butter.
  3. Make the dough: Pour the warm milk-yeast mixture into the dry ingredients and mix until soft dough forms.
  4. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for about 1 hour.
  5. Roll out the dough: After it has risen, punch it down and roll it into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Prepare the filling: Mix together brown sugar, melted butter, and chai spice, then spread over the rolled-out dough.
  7. Form the rolls: Roll the dough tightly and slice into 1-inch pieces, then place in a greased baking pan.
  8. Let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes.
  9. Bake the rolls: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Make the frosting: Whip cream cheese and powdered sugar together, adding vanilla extract.
  11. Prepare the caramel sauce: Melt brown sugar and butter in a saucepan until thickened.
  12. Finish and serve: Drizzle warm caramel over the rolls and top with cream cheese frosting.

Notes

Serve warm with a cup of hot chai or coffee. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container.
