Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup hot coffee or water
  • 1 batch chocolate frosting
  • 12 chocolate sugar cones
  • 12 chocolate wafer cookies
  • Colored sprinkles or candy for decoration
  • Edible glitter or green frosting for accents

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  • 2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugars, baking soda, and salt.
  • 3. Add buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  • 4. Stir in hot coffee or water until batter is thin and glossy.
  • 5. Fill liners two-thirds full and bake for 18–20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • 6. Cool completely before frosting.
  • 7. To make the witch hats, fill each sugar cone with a bit of frosting, then press it onto a chocolate wafer cookie to form the hat.
  • 8. Frost each cupcake, then top with a witch hat and decorate with sprinkles or edible glitter.

Notes

  • You can use any cupcake flavor as the base — vanilla or pumpkin spice also work great.
  • Add a candy buckle (like a small yellow M&M) for a fun witch hat detail.
  • Store cupcakes covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
