  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup (for glaze)
  • A little milk to thin (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast: Combine the warm water and yeast in a small bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: Add the yeast mixture, milk, melted butter, egg, and maple extract to the dry ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough: Dust a surface with flour and knead the dough for about 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  6. Shape the bars: Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thick and cut into rectangular bars.
  7. Second rise: Place the bars on a baking sheet, cover, and let them rise for 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Bake the bars: Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Make the glaze: Mix powdered sugar, maple syrup, and milk in a bowl until smooth.
  11. Glaze the bars: Drizzle the glaze over the cooled bars and let set.
