Swedish Meatballs with Creamy Sauce

Delicious and comforting Swedish meatballs served in a rich creamy sauce, perfect over spaghetti or with mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, salt, pepper, nutmeg, and allspice. Use your hands or a spoon to mix the ingredients well until everything is combined evenly.
  2. Form the Meatballs: Roll the mixture into small meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a plate or a baking sheet.
  3. Brown the Meatballs: Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add butter. Once melted, add the meatballs to the skillet. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until browned on all sides. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  4. Sauté the Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and sauté for 4 to 5 minutes until softened.
  5. Make the Sauce: Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms, stir to coat, and cook for 1 minute. Gradually add beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Heat until thickened, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Add Cream and Meatballs: Stir in heavy cream, then return the browned meatballs to the skillet. Let them simmer in the sauce for about 10 minutes.
  7. Serve and Enjoy: Serve hot over spaghetti or mashed potatoes, garnished with parsley or chives.
